Default Consolation Winner

Hi CJ:

I'm just trying to get some clarity on the consolation winner rules that you have in place. You posted the following:

2010 Final Keeper Rosters

All teams please post your 2010 keepers here, each team has 13 keepers and 5 farm spots (for those who are under 100/50 games)

Steve (STL) was the consolation winner and gets the extra 14th keeper.

Deadline for posting is Midnight on Monday July 5th (est), you can edit your post up until the deadline if you post early.

When the rule was written, the consolation winner was determined by the winner of the consolation bracket and that GM received an extra keeper for winning that bracket. The way the rule was set up, the only teams that could get the extra keeper were the non-playoff teams.

According to our old rules, written last Jun, which was before Yahoo allowed 8 teams to make the playoffs, this is what you wrote:

Prize Money Alteration

Starting with the 2009/2010 season there will be no money prize for the Consolation winner and instead that $25 will go to the overall playoff runner up.

It simply does not make sense for the overall playoff runner up to not get any money, after battling to make the top 6 and then getting all the way to the final.

The consolation winner really is someone who missed the playoffs (top 6) and could be any team from 7th-12th who beat all the other teams failing to make the main playoffs.

On that note, we still want top make the consolation race worth something so instead the winner will get to keep 1 extra "keeper" for a total of 14.

Now taking into consideration all of the above, I think that the consolation winner rule needs to be changed as the 4 non-playoff teams cannot even compete for this extra keeper any more. IMO, if anyone needs the extra keeper, it should be one of the teams amongst the non-playoff teams and not the 5th place winner in the playoff bracket.

I would suggest that we leave the extra keeper as is for this year, but we should consider abolishing the rule in its entirety for the following years for the reasons I stated above. Just my opinion. Thanks for your time.

Steve

The rule absolutely needs to be changed and it will be, but we of course couldnt do it right at the end of the season unfortunately.

We are thinking about having the additional keeper for the highest non playoff team.

Having this additional keeper keeps the non playoff teams interested right to the very end of the season and gives something to strive for. If a team was in the bottom 4 and was way out of the 8th spot he could honestly lose interest as there is nothing to gain or lose by setting his rosters properly etc.
